In order to save money some clients, unfortunately, nowadays hand over a machine translated file which just needs “some editing”.
Honestly, this is not the way a translation should work, as a machine translated text does need a lot more than “some editing”, namely very careful editing by a very skilled professional translator. And let’s face it, a lot of professional translators would not even consider accepting such a project, especially as it takes a lot of time to get some sense into the computer output. It is definitely much easier and faster to translate the text manually from scratch.
Therefore, to answer the above mentioned question, yes, editing a machine translated text can be an option if you just need a translation for personal use, but as soon as it is available for the public, for business or for any official presentation, it should never even be considered.
